The kitschy musical that launched a thousand slumber parties, Grease rode the '70s-era wave of '50s nostalgia all the way to the bank. Don't imagine for a moment that the success and staying power of this film have anything to do with the plot (boy meets girl, etc.) or moral (true happiness = popularity = skin-tight clothes and a lot of hairspray). It's all about the cast and the camp: John Travolta in a ducktail and tight jeans, strutting for all he's worth, Olivia Newton-John playing the virginal girl-next-door, and best of all, Stockard Channing playing the brassy, bossy leader of the Pink Ladies, Rizzo. In the context of the movie, high-energy, marvelously choreographed numbers like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Lovin'" and "You're the One That I Want" are terrific fun (but they hardly justify the existence of the "Grease Megamix"). Still, if you loved it then, you'll love it now -- a long-awaited DVD release that's pure popcorn fun.
