Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable & thought provoking Before I buy a movie I read as many reviews as I can find. Trailers can be extremely misleading even to the point of making a serious movie look like a comedy. "Hope Springs" is a case in point, a movie looking at a very serious & probably common problem with much humour in it......but it is not a pure comedy. Having said that, I really enjoyed this movie, about a couple who have grown apart over their years of marriage until their intimacy level (separate bedrooms) is about at the same level as college room mates & that is nonexistent. Meryl Streep takes a big step & decides that the way things have become is not good enough & twists her husbands arm to go on a marriage therapy week in a small New England town, with the hope of a deeper relationship. Steve Carrel is the therapist & plays it straight, very well, very convincing but straight. A role that I have not seen him play before. Tommy Lee Jones is superb as the grouchy husband who cannot see why they should be paying to fix something that he does not believe is broken....or does he. He complains about the price of the therapy, the food prices, just about everything. The counselling sessions will be cringe inducing for some people, the questions asked, the probing to reveal the truth behind why the couple have become what they have become. I will not go into details here but there is fault on both sides & while the problems are not totally resolved, the movie ends with definite progress being made & some definite hope for the couple of better times ahead. The almost final scene is funny, with a sly reference to Tommy Lee Jones only sexual fantasy that he admitted during the earlier therapy sessions (unrealised & likely to remain so).
