The talented brothers Coen revisit Blood Simple territory with this mesmerizing homage to film noir -- a tightly scripted and stunningly shot story about Ed Crane (Billy Bob Thornton), a small-town barber weighed down with disillusionment and the humiliating infidelity of his boozy, scheming wife, Doris (Frances McDormand). Ed sees a chance to change his life for the better and all it will take is a little blackmail. He wants just enough money from his wife's boss and lover, Big Dave (James Gandolfini), to start the enterprise of his dreams ... a dry cleaning business. But as they will in these sorts of films, things go sideways and Big Dave ends up dead. Doris gets the blame at first, and the action shifts to the courtroom, where Tony Shalhoub gets some terrific scenes as the hotshot defence lawyer. The dialogue is spot-on and is delivered by each character in his or her own perfect way, from Thornton's halting deadpan to McDormand's dripping callousness. The film is a spare, perfect piece of paranoia, disenchantment and fatalism.
