When upscale New Yorker couple Lenny and Amanda adopt a young boy, Lenny is so impressed with the lad that he becomes obsessed with finding the child's birth mother. After all, he surmises, any woman who had such a child must be perfect. Instead, "mom" turns out to be Linda Ash, a hooker/porn star who has led a troubled, traumatic life, and who deeply regrets having given up her baby. Lenny is so taken with Linda that he decides to help her improve her situation -- a task that forever alters both their worlds.
Allen uses the classical Greek play form, complete with a chorus, to portray the comic travails of a Manhattan marriage as the schlubby sportswriter husband meets up with a ditzy hooker in his search for his adopted son's natural mother.
