Directed by John Sturges
Starring Steve McQueen

MGM/UA Home Video | May 12, 2009 | DVD

The Great Escape is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.

This high-octane flick is one of the best — and most macho — war films ever made. Based on the true story of 250 Second World War prisoners who tried to escape from a German PoW camp, The Great Escape will have you glued to the screen. James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum and Steve McQueen star as the motley group of prisoners who form an elaborate plan to fool the guards while digging a massive series of tunnels beneath and out of the camp. McQueen is extraordinary as “The Cooler King,” the prisoner who will never stop trying to escape and whose spirit will never break.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 'Greatest' Escape. This film has to rank as probably the best POW film ever made! Who can ever forget McQueen barreling over the German countryside in his stolen motorcycle. Just doesn't get any better. And to think he almost walked off the picture! The film is accompanied by an informative mini-documentary which gives insight into the real-life events. If you like 'escape' films this one makes a terrific companion-piece to "Stalag 17", "The Wooden Horse" and a little-known Brian Keith gem "The McKenzie Break".
