Discovery

Performers Daft Punk

Virgin | March 13, 2001 | Compact Disc

Discovery is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.

Capturing the energy and excitement of the dance floor is by no means an easy feat, but Daft Punk manage with a total lack of self-consciousness. They make no bones about the fact that they’re trying to have fun with their music. Listeners who remember the methodically pointless video for their hit “Around the World,” with its robotic characters going around and around in circles will understand the playfulness of Discovery. Newcomers will be thankful that this second release is as accessible as the last, while retaining a sense of honesty and lack of pretension that is rare in dance music today.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it This album is probably Daft Punk best studio album, not only does it avoid the songs are shorter and less repeditive than ether "Homework" or "Human After All". This album provids the the most dynamic daft thats around. Not only does it contain some of there greatest hist (Harder Better Faster Stronger, Areodynamic, Face to Face and of course One More Time) but it housts what are arguably the only love balads ever made by daft punk (digital love, something about us). What's truly remarcable is that they cover such a wide range of musical styles in one album without sounding fake. To the contrary every song seems to be perfectly composed (with the possible exeption of Cressendolls).

Editorial Notes

Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo.
Additional personnel includes: Todd Edwards, Romananthony.
"Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic thread runs throughout DISCOVERY.
"Digital Love" sounds like the theme to a '70s sitcom as realized by the Buggles. "Nightvision" is a mellow, wordless, quiet storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, "Superheroes" marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat. Ultimately, DISCOVERY is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.
