Jazz Heritage: Blackstick (1931-1938)

Performers Sidney Bechet

March 3, 2003 | Compact Disc

This LP from MCA's Jazz Heritage series of the early '80s mostly features the great Sidney Bechet as a sideman with Noble Sissle's large show band and on a small-group date under Sissle's sponsorship. Since these are Sissle's most jazz-oriented tracks and Bechet has plenty of solo space (particularly on "Roll on Mississippi, Roll On," "Polka Dot Rag" and the combo sides), this music is worth acquiring in one form or another. As a bonus there are four performances from a 1938 blues date by singer Trixie Smith with Bechet and trumpeter Charlie Shavers. ~ Scott Yanow
