Real Life Hits

Performers Gary Burton Quartet

ECM | July 1, 2007 | Compact Disc

Not yet rated | write a review
Personnel: Gary Burton (vibraphone); Makoto Ozone (piano); Steve Swallow (bass); Mike Hyman (drums).
Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in November 1984.
Aside from an album with Keith Jarrett in the '60s and a few duet releases with Chick Corea, Gary Burton rarely included piano in his quartet and quintet ensembles. REAL LIFE HITS adds pianist Makoto Ozone to a rhythm section of bass player Steve Swallow and drummer Mike Hyman. Burton plays off Ozone's piano (and vice versa) with clarity and contrast.
HITS' seven pieces include Carla Bley's title number as well as her "Syndrome." Ozone's ballad, "I Need You Here," is another gorgeous melody over which Burton's vibes linger. The musicians revisit Ellington's "Fleurette Africaine," a piece that Burton's '60s quartet (which included Swallow) had recorded for their LOFTY FAKE ANAGRAM album. ECM's trademark pristine recording quality is perfectly suited to the material. The leader's vibes sparkle, wrapped in the sympathetic setting created by his three cohorts.
