Jean Craighead George’s love affair with the wolf began in Alaska in 1971, when she spent a summer studying wolves and the tundra at the Arctic Research Laboratory at Barrow. Her experiences that summer inspired her to write the 1973 Newbery Medal winner, Julie of the Wolves. Since then she has traveled out west and back to Alaska many times to observe wolves. She has fed them with bottles, watched them play their pup games, and learned to speak their language.
Jean George is the author of more than sixty books for children. Two of her recent picture books include Dear Rebecca, Winter is Here illustrated by Loretta Krupinski, and Everglades, illustrated by Loretta Krupinski. Mrs. George lives in Chappaqua, New York. There she speaks the language of wolves with her Alaskan husky, Qimmiq.
