Flipped

Random House Children's Books | May 13, 2003 | Trade Paperback

Flipped is rated 4.8333 out of 5 by 24.
The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. She says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down. And just as he’s thinking there’s more to her than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed.

This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too funny! Flipped was like a classic love story! This one person likes another since forever but the person they like only realizes that they like the other when they have disappeared from their life. In this case, it's Juli liking Bryce since Gr. 2 and Bryce doesn't seem to truly notice Juli until 6 years later when Juli is starting to think that Bryce is just completely overrated! It's a funny turn of events that kept me hooked throughout the whole book. I have to say though, what Bryce did in the end really did surprise me. I just wish that Juli had gotten what she had really longed for in the end! But, I'm sure that you'll love the book as much as I did! The difference in the two's point of views is really hilarious and I just know you'll enjoy this book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Sweet! This book was adorable! I started reading it and couldn't put it down! What Juli does for Bryce is just so sweet and I loved the part where he planted the syncamore tree for Juli. These two charaters finally find love for each other, but there are bumps in the road that keep them away from each other. I liked how the auhtor didn't fully conclude the story because it then gives the reader a chance to come up with their own conclusions. I highly recommend this to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Adorable, Funny, Sweet Story. When I bought this book, I hadn't realized that I'd actually seen it before. When I searched the author, another cover came up of a baby chick that was upside down, with the same title, and I instantly remembered seeing it way back. Though, it never really intrigued me enough to buy it, it just seemed kind of out of the norm from what I usually read, and I guess I never really thought that I would end up liking it. But, as much as I hate to say it, the cover really attracted my attention, and it's a part of the reason why I got it. I mean, it's a really pretty cover, and it seemed to give the reader a little insight on the depth of what's to come. I mean, a boy and a girl sitting together in a tree, looking out into the distance, and holding hands?! That really had me intrigued. This is the motion picture version, that was recently released. It also includes a variety of pictures from the film in the book, and that brought the book to life even more. The cover really, really had me interested in seeing what this story had to offer, and this book even managed to exceed my expectations is so many ways. This is definitely not your regular love story, and I was so glad to have read a story that had me loving love stories even more. THIS is what a good love story is all about. I have tons of favourites, and this definitely earned a spot. I wouldn't exactly call it a "love" story, because Draanen really created a story with a bit of cute love here and there, but for me, she did so much more with it, that it became more than a love story, it really exceeded fiction to me. It became real, heartwarming, and really impacting. In this short book, it really brings out a lot of emotions and just so much. I've read love stories longer than this, that didn't even come close to this. Ever since the first day Bryce moved into his family's new home, he has known Juli Baker. An annoying and relentless girl that wants to spend every little moment with Bryce. He wants nothing to do with her, but she wants everything to do with him. He thinks she's annoying. She thinks his blue eyes are dazzling. He hides from her. She thinks he's the cutest thing. He hasn't gotten past her relentless behaviour to even look at her that way. Back and forth. It goes on. From second grade to seventh grade, nothing really changes. He tries to ignore her, she hasn't gotten over his blue eyes, and black hair. To him the past six years have been dedicated to stratigically avoid her, to her, it has been swooning. Though, they don't really know eachother. Bryce knows her as the annoying neighbour, and Juli hasn't considered anything else past his looks. Eighth grade comes, and things flip. By seeing who the other really is, the roles are switched. Juli has seen what Bryce really is, and she wants nothing to do with him. Bryce has come to see and know more of Juli, and he can't help but thinking about her, staring at her, and wanting to spend time with her. It's a game of cat and dog. We switch from Juli's to Bryce's point of view, and see there take on what happened. We go back, and we go forward. Memories, conversations, thoughts, reactions, contemplations and emotions leave you attached to the characters and captivated right until the end. There are layers, and layers to this story. Slowly you learn more about Bryce and Juli, and your left completely marveled at how wonderful this book is. A definite must read! I'm sure this won't be the last time I will read this memorable tale. 5/5 2010-057

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless I read it in the fourth grade and I completely loved it. I read it again not too long ago, just to see if the excitement I first went through the story with was still there. It was. Flipped completely brings out the immature, 'cootie-ridden' kids we all remember, the infamous first crush where you just can't stop thinking about how blue his eyes are or (this didn't happen to me) the fuzz on his ears. It's an amusing, cute, loveable story about first love, first mistakes, and ultimately changing and growing up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Touching As the title says, this is one of the most touching books I have ever read. This book brought me smiles, laughter, tears, and made me reflect on my own life. This book is written in two points of views, which makes it very interesting as you get to see both sides of the story. I highly recommend it to everyone, not just kids.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fourth Grade Favorite I read this back in fourth grade and it was one of my all time favorites. This story (how i remember it) is about two people who meet each other and don't exactly hit it off. While the girl has feelings for the guy, he doesnt feel the same way. After time the situation switches, where the guy has feelings for the girl and the girl has already gotten over him. I think it is a cute love story. I think I will read it again when I have time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i think i'm in love...with the book of course this book is amazing, i dont know how my life was before this book because the moment i knew it was going to end, the moment i flipped to the second last page, the moment i read those sentences that made the story what it is, i almost didn't want to read the sentences just so i could keep the book longer, knowing that i would have to finish it. it's a great read and your life isn't complete without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fanta-bulous This is just about the best romantic comedy book I have ever read. The two people perspective is amazing, and let you see Juli and Bryce's individual view. What I really liked was how the book implied that appearance isn't everything and you should see beyond it. This is a really touching story. I'm surprised this isn't a movie yet, it's the perfect story-movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from omfgz Wow. I have to admit that I didn't expect much from this book, but once I started reading it, I really became excited. I loved reading Juli's side && how she described Bryce in a way that you almost could find Bryce loveable. Of course, after all the things, you can understand why Juli was mad && why Bryce would be sorry. omg, this book is so wonderful. I was so sad with the way it ended, I wanted it to go on forever. It should me made into a movie, I seriously support that idea.

Read from the Book

Diving UnderAll I've ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone For her to back off-you know, just give me some space. It all started the summer before second grade when our moving van pulled into her neighborhood. And since we're now about done with the eighth grade, that, my friend, makes more than half a decade of strategic avoidance and social discomfort. She didn't just barge into my life. She barged and shoved and wedged her way into my life. Did we invite her to get into our moving van and start climbing all over boxes? No! But that's exactly what she did, taking over and showing off like only Juli Baker can.My dad tried to stop her. "Hey!" he says as she's catapulting herself on board. "What are you doing? You're getting mud everywhere!" So true, too. Her shoes were, like, caked with the stuff. She didn't hop out, though. Instead, she planted her rear end on the floor and started pushing a big box with her feet. "Don't you want some help?" She glanced my Way. "It sure looks like you need it."I didn't like the implication. And even though my dad had been tossing me the same sort of look all week, I could tell-he didn't like this girl either. "Hey! Don't dothat," he warned her. "There are some really valuable things in that box.""Oh. Well, how about this one?" She scoots over to a box labeled LENox and looks my way again. "We should push it together!""No, no, no!" my dad says, then pulls her up by the arm. "Why don't you run along home? Your mother's probably wonderin

About the Author

Books have always been a part of Wendelin Van Draanen’s life. Her mother taught her to read at an early age, and she has fond memories of story time with her father, when she and her brothers would cuddle up around him and listen to him read stories.

Growing up, Van Draanen was a tomboy who loved to be outside chasing down adventure. She did not decide that she wanted to be an author until she was an adult. When she tried her hand at writing a screenplay about a family tragedy, she found the process quite cathartic and from that experience, turned to writing novels for adults. She soon stumbled upon the joys of writing for children.

Feedback from her readers is Van Draanen’s greatest reward for writing. “One girl came up to me and told me I changed her life. It doesn’t get any better than that,” she said. Van Draanen hopes to leave her readers with a sense that they have the ability to steer their own destiny—that individuality is a strength, and that where there’s a will, there’s most certainly a way.

Wendelin Van Draanen is the winner of the 1999 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Children’s Mystery Book for Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief and lives with her husband and two sons in California.
