Rated 4 out of 5 by from An "OLD" favorite I've given this book many times as a grad gift but people often have the book already! It's getting to be a tired idea. My "NEW" favorite is "Dream" by Susan V. Bosak -- rich illustrations with meaningful text has proven to be appreciated by grads young and old. It is a real gorgeous gem of a book and it's Canadian!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful, Charming Message and Wish This is one of my favourite books to give as a gift - it communicates everything you’d want to say to someone you care about, no matter what the age or stage or life, embarking on a new journey or having a little trouble. It's sweet, charming, and supportive - a book to revisit when you need a little encouragement and fortitude.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fun book! I haven't read this book before. I loved it!!!!! What a fun book! It is inspirational, too. I was smiling the entire time I was reading it. I can see why people give it as a graduation gift, and in fact, the dust jacket says that it was from a graduation speech that Dr. Seuss once gave.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from and the Challenges You Will Face Dr. Seuss is such a universal presence, and he seems to represent universal wisdom. As an example, I recall the Peanuts cartoon I read during my childhood. Linus had filled out an application form, and he explained to the listener: "It asked for family physician, and I did not know what to write. So I put, `Dr. Seuss.'" The last book that came out before his death, "Oh, The Places You'll Go" was Dr. Seuss's (Theodor Geisel's) legacy of sage guidance. Most known for his children's books featuring such animal characters as The Cat in the Hat, Horton, and Yertle the Turtle or fun concepts such as Green Eggs and Ham, he came up with something a little different: a book about facing life's challenges. Ostensibly for children, it is also well-suited for adults facing graduation, the next job, the next challenge in life, etc. Just as life can take you everywhere, the main character seems to go everywhere here: walking down paths, roads, and mazes; climbing hills; riding balloons; wandering over rock-faces; rowing in the sea; and encountering disjointed cities surrounded by oddball arched constructions. Lots of Seuss-like people and animals appear on the journey, but they are just for scenery: the prose concerns only the young boy, "you." It is the middle of the book onward that is most important, for it warns of the letdown from ambition. Dr. Seuss persists with the theme of challenges until the end, fittingly, because everyone will not find life to be only a bowl of cherries but will encounter disappointments and rough seas as well. A universal point made by an everyman's doctor, who ultimately betrays his optimism, confident that the reader will meet the challenges.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Grad Gift Worth Giving In his usual rhyme and oddly surreal style, this Dr. Seuss book takes on the notion of graduation and big old world out there for you to move into. I think what gives this book the timeless, repeating quality is that it quite frankly discusses how you can do anything, succeed no matter what, always win - except when you don't, can't or won't - and how that is, in itself, not a reason not to try. There's a practicality to it that is both charming and uplifting, and keeps the message clear: You're going to start something big, and boy will it be exciting, regardless of how it may turn out in the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great classic Makes a great graduation gift - for those who are still deciding! Also good for mothers who are expecting (there is a different version specifically for that)
Date published: 2008-06-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from An Alternative A nice graduation gift but everyone seems to have it already! A new, better alternative is "Dream" by Susan V. Bosak. It has a lot of meaning for both young and old graduates with gorgeous illustrations. Plus it's a Canadian book! A real gem to give as a gift.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspriring Words for young and old... In typical Seussian style one can't help but feel motivated to move on from whatever point in life you're experiencing with a whole new outlook. Great gift for births, graduations or just making a new start in life. Seuss is able to transcend both age and status to inspire everyone to make the most of life and empower the reader to be the best they can be!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I never knew... The principle of my nieces school read this to the graduating class of grade eights. I am not sure if it was lost on them, but I know that it surely was picked up by the many of the parents. A book about life and your adventures in it; both good and bad. I had to buy it, just because it was so true, all of it. Buy it, both parents and kids - later in life maybe - will be inspired by its words.
