Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Twenty-One Balloons This book is still as delightful to me as when I first read it at age 11. It is a creative, inventive travel story full of exciting balloon inventions and innovative people. Professor Sherman sets out to travel the world for a year by balloon, but is quickly stranded on the island of Krakatoa — just a week before its destruction in an historic volcanic explosion. There he meets the San Franciscans, who have established a “Gourmet Government,” secluded from the rest of the world. Sherman is a most engaging storyteller. His own enthusiastic spirit and eager curiosity are qualities to which bright children can all relate.
