Beaches is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.
They met on a beach when they were very young, brassy C.C. Bloom (Bette Midler) and classy Hillary Whitney (Barbara Hershey). Through good times and bad times, through broken marriages and budding careers, they still had each other. And together, they would face their greatest challenge ... as only best friends could. Hershey is splendid, and Midler will astound you all over again with her comedic and musical talents in this critically acclaimed box office smash. BEACHES glows with warmth, humor, and tenderness.... This is one friendship you'll enjoy every minute of.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You Will Love This Movie! Watched this decades ago during my youth and shared with our kids that also loved it.  Incredible movie and wonderful soundtrack listening to Bette's voice.  Looked for this movie for a long time and would definitely recommend.

Synopsis

The story of a deep friendship, lasting from childhood to beyond death, between two very different women -- one a poor but ambitious Jewish girl from the Bronx who goes on to become a famous Broadway star, and the other an attractive WASP from a wealthy San Francisco family who starts out with all the advantages in life yet manages to find nothing but disappointment.

Description

The chance meeting of two young girls from totally different backgrounds becomes the friendship of a lifetime. As they lead their separate lives, they come to realize and later rely on the strength that their friendship provides. Academy Award Nominations: Best Art Direction.

Notes

Estimated budget $20 million. Shot in Metrocolor. Eugenia Weston designed Bette Midler's makeup and Bob Mills applied it; Barbara Lorenz was Ms. Midler's hairstylist. Critically-lauded screen debut of young actress Mayim Bialik, who in the early 90s became the star of a popular television sitcom called "Blossom". Working titles for the film were "Friends" and "Remember Me."
