Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Inspires I saw Cosmos on PBS when it first aired in the fall and winter of 1980, in my final year of high school. Re-watching it recently, I am very impressed that, for the most part, it is still accurate and relevant. There are some updates tacked on to some episodes to briefly discuss new discoveries and advances since the show first aired. Host Carl Sagan does a marvellous job showing viewers both what we've learned from science and what the practice of science is all about. He inspires real awe for the cosmos and its exploration. This series was one of the reasons I went into engineering, and I think it still has the power to make young people think seriously about a career in the sciences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful and important I am showing some episodes of Cosmos (starting with the magnificent first episode) to graduate students in my class at the University of Western Ontario, in order to communicate both the central ideas and the true spirit of the scientific enterprise. One certainly need not be a college student to fall in love with the series. It holds rich adventure and stimulation for people from all walks of life, and effectively communicates to those at many different levels of knowledge and sophistication. Sagan does not presume *any* prior knowledge, and yet explains things so clearly and beautifully... he not only teaches the key ideas but also communicates why they are exciting. Sagan explains things with charm and obvious humility, standing beside us and sharing our wonder at the magnificence of the world he describes. This series has retained virtually all of its scientific value in the years since it first appeared -- which is truly amazing since science has advanced so much in the details of what we know. The reason is that Cosmos focuses on conveying deep insight into the central essence of what science reveals about our world (and ourselves). Yet it is not "vague" or overly general. It is chocked full of such a range of fresh ideas with so much intellectual depth that it can stimulate anyone with a curious mind -- even graduate students! :-) I am also introducing it to my students for another reason: Cosmos not only communicates a vision of the world as awesome and awesomely beautiful, it also communicates a feeling for how science can be a nonreligious yet truly spiritual quest to better appreciate and understand it. And since I am a scientist who shares and cherishes this vision, I am dismayed by the extent to which it is being lost, and science is viewed with suspicion and hostility in recent years. We need to show Cosmos to our finest and brightest new minds, young people who deserve to be inspired by it -- just as I was.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cosmos rules! These shows are amazing! I watched these as a child and it inspired me to go into science. You will learn more from these videos than you will in all of highschool and some university and Carl Sagan presents it in such a way that it is interesting and entertaining. These videos changed my life and my outlook on the universe and they will for you too.
