Starring William Hartnell

Warner Home Video | August 11, 2009 | DVD

Doctor Who - The Beginning Collection is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.
This collection includes "An Unearthly Child," the premiere episode of the Doctor Who adventure series. Here Doctor Who (William Hartnell) leads his young granddaughter and a pair of her teachers on a prehistoric quest for fire. Then, Doctor Who grapples with the Daleks for the first time in "The Daleks," an extended collection of seven episodes from the popular BBC series. Finally, in "The Edge of Destruction," the Tardis lands on a seemingly dead world and the Doctor becomes curious. While exploring the planet's empty city, Who and crew discover--to their horror--a deadly amount of radiation in the air, a mutant race of peaceable Thais, and the sinister Daleks who control the world for their own cruel advantage.

Taking place entirely inside the Tardis, "The Edge of Destruction" features original Doctor William Hartnell in a terrifying story of sabotage. When the crew awaken after an explosion, they discover that the ship is barely running, and no on is sure what has happened.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential viewing for Sci-Fi / TV buffs The original Doctor Who ran for 26 years, from 1963 to 1989, making it the world's longest running science series (a record that still holds today - and is unlikely to change). A new series is entering it's fourth year in the UK and has pumped new life into Britain's landmark franchise about an eccentric who travels through time in a ship disguised as a 1960's police telephone box. This boxed set collects the series first 13 episodes as well as a plethora of extras and is essential viewing for anybody interested in Doctor Who, science fiction, or television history in general. While the productions do seem dated at times, they hold up quite well and are very atmospheric. Seeing what the production team was able to accomplish with little time and money is truly inspiring. The restoration work on the fourty-five year old episodes is phenomenal. The extras are also superb: commentary on most episodes as well as "Production Note" subtitle options; documentaries on the origin of the series, featurettes on individual stories, photo galleries, the unedited "Pilot Episode" including outtakes and a reconstruction of seven "lost" episodes using photographs and surviving audio recordings.
