High-spirited Gigi (Leslie Caron) lives with her Grandmama (Hermione Gingold) in genteel poverty in a Parisian townhouse and is schooled Thursday afternoons by her sophisticated aunt in the ways of high society: deportment, posture and an appreciation of fine wine, food and jewels. The whole idea, of course, is to shape Gigi into the perfect mistress for some lucky Frenchman, as has been the habit of the women in her family for generations. But no one counted on wealthy family friend Gaston (Louis Jourdan) actually falling in love with her and proposing (quelle horreur!) marriage! This effervescent musical features Maurice Chevalier at his charming best in numbers like "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and "I Remember It Well" and highlights costumes and postcard-perfect images of France that will make you as giddy as if you'd had a glass of champagne.

Description

Set in Paris at the turn of the century, this delightful Lerner and Loewe musical, based on a story by Collette, follows a precocious French girl as she is groomed into a would-be courtesan, blossoming into a stunning woman. The story provides plenty of opportunity for Minnelli and MGM to pull out all the stops in its first musical production shot on location. Paris and Caron never looked lovelier, and Jourdan and Chevalier are so French, no? Songs include: "Gigi," "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," and "Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well." Academy Award Nominations: 9. Academy Awards: 9, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best (Adapted) Screenplay.

Notes

Song composer Frederick Loewe, screenwriter-lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, and production designer Cecil Beaton, who collaborated on the 1956 Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" went on the work together again on "Gigi."
