The film was based on an 1886 conflict between cattlemen and immigrant farmers in Wyoming.
At the time it was released HEAVEN'S GATE was the most expensive Hollywood production in history, an astronomical $36 million.
The expense of HEAVEN'S GATE is said to have played a major role in the collapse of its studio, United Artists.
The original release of HEAVEN'S GATE ran 219 minutes, but was cut by 70 minutes for re-release 5 months later.
Despite its disappointing US box office results, the film still has a cult following in Europe.
