John Q (Ws) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
It's easy to expect a lot of a film with such impressive star power -- Denzel Washington, James Woods, Robert Duvall, Anne Heche, Ray Liotta -- but this earnest indictment of the state of the U.S. health care system ends up with too much melo- in its drama. Washington plays Chicago-area everyman John Quincy Archibald, a man with troubles enough: the factory where he works is scaling back hours, which means he may lose his house, and his wife is beginning to give under the pressure. When his young son falls ill during a baseball game, John races to a city emergency room where he learns that his boy depserately needs heart surgery. Unfortunately, the costly procedure isn't covered by the family's insurance. Though John convinces a compassionate cardiac surgeon (James Woods) to waive his fee, the procedure is still out of reach. Desperate to do something other than watch his son die, John takes the ER staff and patients hostage and the media circus begins. Amid the camera lights and barricades, the chief of police (Ray Liotta) and a top hostage negotiator (Robert Duavll) try to reason with John before tension turns to tragedy. A great premise, but the execution is disappointing.

The Infinifilm DVD includes filmmaker's commentary, deleted scenes with optional commentary and behand-the-scenes footage.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor Movie but Amazing Lead Performance Denzel Washington has to be one of the most respected actors in all of Hollywood. He has charisma, has the talent, has 2 Oscars, the man has done and has everything. i may not be a fan of his acting all the time, but I can't denie he is an amazing person. But this performance, in this movie, is amazing. The raw emotion Denzel shows on the screen is amazing. The movie other than Washington though, I was not a fan of. The plot is unbelievable, sure a dad would do anything to get his son help, but take a emergency room hostage is a little far fetched. Also the way the hostages just embraced John I could not buy, only one of the hostage actually dosen't like John. With so many other big name stars I am surprised i didn't like the other performances. Robert Duvall and James Woods were underused in there small roles. On the other hand, i did like Ray Liotta, it was a different kind of role for him. Overall a bad movie, but an all star performance by Denzel Washington.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome John Q is a powerful movie about the love between a father and his son. When John’s son gets sick the insurance company denies him coverage of his son’s operation that he desperately needs. As a result John takes drastic steps in order to save his sons life. A major issue portrayed in this movie is the division of power between the rich and the poor when it comes to the American health care system. The movie showed how the ethical perspective of some people shifts when they understand how much money someone has, which seems consistent with today’s society. In society it seems like the more money you have the better you are treated, just because people think they are able to get something out of it. Yet they leave the poor to fend for themselves. John Q shows us all this and more. It gives anyone a different perspective on society and maybe, perhaps certainly, will change the way you think and feel on healthcares unethical treatment of the poor.
