Paramount Home Entertainment | January 10, 2006 | DVD

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is rated 3.6667 out of 5 by 3.
This comedic saga revolves around the travails of the three Baudelaire orphans, Sunny, Klaus and Violet who find themselves fobbed off on a series of odd people, including the narrator Lemony Snicket. The recurring bad guy is a distant family relative named Count Olaf, who initially takes in the kids but clearly is trying to separate them from a family inheritance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious The genius of Jim Carrey! Honestly this movie cracks me up every time I watch it. It follows the first three books and although it was a somewhat different in terms of events and their order, it stayed pretty true to the series. Now that I have read further into the series, I always envision his face and over the top acting when I read the parts containing Count Olaf.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Really really bad script This movie has a great cast, fantastic production values, and terrific music. Unfortunately, it is missing the one thing that can really make or break a movie ... a good script. The writing is just awful! The dialog is awkward. The plot is full of holes, cliches, and gaps. The story itself is terribly creepy. I will not allow my child to see this film, not only for the lame script, but because of the very creepy wedding scene between a 14 year old girl (who looks like she is 11 or 12) and the lecherous middle-aged man played by Jim Carey. This movie should be rated 14+, not PG, for that scene alone. The villans, though very well played, are one dimensional. The heros have no character at all. No time is spent showing us who these kids are, so in the end, it is hard to care about their fate. I understand that the books upon which the movie is based are very popular. Perhaps the filmmakers should have looked at why the books are popular and tried to put some of those ingredients into this movie. Also, in 90 minutes, the contents of three novels are covered. Perhaps if they had made three movies instead, this might have been a more rewarding cinematic experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wicked This is one of my favourite movies ever. The kids are amazing and Jim Carrey is great too. I absolutely love every single minute of this movie.
