Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spielberg at his Best: An Historical Epic Steven Spielberg is at his best when he is telling an historical story about an incredible individuals). He has done it before with Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and Munich. Abraham Lincoln would most definitely fall into that list as an incredible individual. Spielberg makes you 100% percent believe you are in Civil War era Washington D.C. He gets the costumes, setting and characterization down, he does his research and it creates the template for a great movie. If you are looking for a movie that is true and true Civil War Era this is it. On top of the setting he picks a great story to tell. Not only is it a story about politics and its inner workings, there is a bigger story, telling the tale of ending slavery. There is so much history in this movie that it could have gotten bogged down in the facts and oratory. It does not, he balances entertainment and history, and it is a masterful job. What helps Spielberg is a collection of outstanding performances. Daniel Day-Lewis has to be in the conversation for one of the best actors of all time. With his 3rd Academy Award for best pictures they certainly think he is. he is the first actor to win that many. You absolutely believe he is Abraham Lincoln. There is no waver. On top of the incredible lead performance, there are spectacualr supporting roles. Tommy Lee Jones leads the way with an outstanding turn as Thaddeus Stevens. he was robbed of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. After watching this I am convinced he should have won. Sally Fields is very good as the emotionally unstable Mary Todd Lincoln. Other notable supporting roles were done by David Spader, Joesph Gordon-Levitt, David Strathairn and Hal Holbrook. Overall this is a film that should be remember for a long time. For its message, its movie making skill and just for entertainment.
