It is the year 2274 and ecological disaster has driven civilization indoors. Life is one great big shopping mall where its inhabitants wear unisex jumpsuits, sex is quite vigorously sanctioned and turning 30 is a crime punishable by death. The police force are Sandmen, hunters employed to chase “runners,” those who aren’t willing to participate in the death ritual they must undergo on their 30th birthday. But when Sandman Logan (Michael York) reaches this age through a computer glitch, he — along with cohort Jessica (Jenny Agutter) — runs for the exits in an attempt to find Sanctuary, a paradise said to exist beyond the domed city. Logan’s Run is a science fiction triumph, a thought-provoking tale that is as ambitious as it is entertaining, and a powerful dystopian vision. The special effects won an Oscar at the 1976 Academy Awards.

Synopsis

The year is 2274, civilization exists under a huge dome, and everyone is encouraged to lead a pleasure-filled lifestyle. There's just one hitch: no one is allowed to live past the age of 29. This doesn't sit well with three friends, who decide to escape from their domed (and doomed) existence.

Description

In a 23rd-century world of pleasure and perfection, Logan's job is to kill anyone past the age of 30. But when his turn for sacrifice comes (at age 30), he decides to flee the bubble-domed paradise and find a mythical "sanctuary" that lies outside. Ambitious, entertaining science fiction based on the novel by William Nolan and George Clayton. Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Cinematography.
