Rated out of 5 by from Winner of a Parents' Choice Silver Honor Award A line in this eccentric delight of a film goes like this: "If you can control your family, you've gone terribly wrong somewhere." Indeed, this movie adaptation of British zoololgist/environmentalist Gerald Durrell's memoir unflinchingly reveals the frequently off-kilter behavior of twelve-year-old Gerry, his mother and his three siblings during their stay on the Greek island of Corfu just before the outbreak of World War II. Mrs. Durrell (played by the Oscar-nominated Imelda Staunton) packs up her bored and slightly sickly children from England's wet and dreary climate and heads for the calming Mediterranean island where her family offers everything but peace. Young Gerry has a passion for bugs and animals, collecting them in his jungle of a room. Larry (portrayed by burgeoning star actor Matthew Goode), the serious and arrogant writer of the family, is constantly searching for his way out of the "bourgeoisie" while offering sharp-tongued quips to criticize his relatives. Son number two, Leslie, is a well-meaning but slightly over-the-top sportsman who likes to shoot guns at every opportunity, and the man-crazy daughter, Margo, find Greece a liberating experience. As the family moves from villa to villa&,mdash;in an effort to keep everyone happy— they aggregate loving, larger-than-life friends among the Greek residents, including the elegant scientist Theo, the emotional Spiro, and the magical wandering Rose-Beetle Man a complaining old woman who takes care of the family in one of the homes. Originally aired as part of PBS's "Masterpiece Theatre" anthology, the surprisingly brisk comedy is best suited for parents to watch with children twelve-years-old and up. A caution is that some of the romantic elements are a bit mature for younger viewers. Still, this story of love and togetherness, in spite of sharp familial differences, is far better developed than the majority of current TV and feature film fare.
