When Velvet, a headstrong teenage girl, wins an unruly horse in a contest, she decides -- against the wishes of her parents -- to train the animal, and enter it in England's most prestigious horse race: the Grand National Sweepstakes. But her friend, a jockey who gave up the sport, knows how dangerous the race can be with such a predictable animal. Will Velvet and her horse be able to win it all?
The poignant story of Velvet Brown, a young working-class girl who wins a race horse in a raffle and, with the help of a skittish, gun-shy ex-jockey, trains it to be a champion. The family pools their money and enters their pride and joy in the prestigious Grand National race, only to have their hopes dashed when the rider renegs. Undaunted, Velvet disguises herself as a man by cropping her hair and rides to victory in his stead. This uplifting adaptation of Enid Bagnold's novel features stunning photography of coastal England and acclaimed cross-cut editing that heightens the tension in the famous race scene. Academy Award Nominations: 5, including Best Director, Best (Color) Cinematography. Academy Awards: 2, including Best Film Editing, Best Supporting Actress--Anne Revere.
