As much a movie about anger as it is about self-destruction, Raging Bull tells the story of Jake La Motta (Robert DeNiro), a Bronx-born boxer who expressed himself with his fists. Scarred by his Catholic youth and propelled by his machismo, La Motta's violent nature begins to get the best of him, taking a toll on house and home, not to mention career and marriage. Abrasive, passionate and dark, Martin Scorcese's 1980 film is saturated with emotion, violence and a self-imposed rage that shows how personal demons can do some serious psychological damage.

Synopsis

Considered by many critics to be the best film of the 1980s, this gritty docudrama about hardheaded prizefighter Jake La Motta is so astonishingly real it seems like the champ's black-and-white home-movie reels have been spliced together. Robert De Niro’s Oscar-winning performance is intense and awe inspiring, and Martin Scorsese uses his regular bag of camera tricks to add to the proceedings. The film features a stellar supporting turn by Joe Pesci as La Motta’s brother, Joey.
