This quirky film, based on Edward Riche's novel of same name, is set in a Newfoundland coastal town, where strange sightings, it seems, are commonplace, if sometimes fictional. William Hurt plays dogged Newf Dave Purcell, whose marriage is on the skids and whose restaurant, The Auk, like its extinct namesake, has never taken off. Abandoned by his wife, Dave sits alone in his pantry, trying to consume all his stores (especially the booze) before his creditors come to claim it. Things seems pretty desperate until Dave's wacko nighbour Phonse (Andy Jones) hatches a hare-brained -- or rather, bird-brained -- scheme: report local sightings of an elusive species of duck to lure birdwatchers to the town and drum up some business for the restaurant. Shockingly, the plan works, and Dave enlists the help of Phonse's sister-in-law Alice (the always delightful Molly Parker) to help run the place, which introduces some interesting sexual tension for lonely Dave. But Phonse is mixed up in more than tourism scams -- he's found a stash of cocaine washed up on a nearby beach and claimed it as his own and he's harbouring paranoid delusions that the folks at Winnebago are trying to steal his ideas for an underwater RV. Between drug runners, narcotics detectives, corporate lawyers and disgruntled ornithologists, Phonse and Dave are in a flock of trouble.
