Astounding battle scenes, powerful social themes and a subtle understanding of human sexuality make this restored version of Spartacus one of the greatest historical epics ever put to film. Kirk Douglas produced and starred in the incredible story of a slave who fights back against his Roman captors, leading a heroic though ultimately tragic rebellion. Spartacus would have died at the hands of another gladiator, if that other man hadn't chosen to sacrifice himself to spare the hero's life. The sacrifice inspired the gladiator and drove him to strike back at his Roman oppressors. Brilliant performances from Kirk Douglas, Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier and Peter Ustinov make this film a powerful classic, seen here as the creators meant you to see it.
