Columbia TriStar Home Video | October 21, 2003 | DVD

Stand By Me is rated 5 out of 5 by 3.

This touchingly humorous film has been a perennial favourite since its release in 1986. Rob Reiner directs a fine cast of young actors to great effect in Stand by Me, based on Stephen King’s novella The Body. Gordie (Whil Wheaton) is an aspiring teenage writer trying to come to terms with the death of his brother. He and three friends, Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Vern (Jerry O’Connell) and Teddy (Corey Feldman) embark on an adventure to find the body of another child who has gone missing and whom authorities presume dead. Along the way they’ll confront a gang of bullies, their own secret torments and the inevitability of growing up. Often funny, sometimes sad and frightening, this film is a truly excellent coming-of-age story, despite its occasional overindulgence in coarse language. This DVD version offers commentary by director Rob Reiner, Walking the Tracks documentary, theatrical trailers and loads of great features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from That's Weird...What The H*ll Is Goofy? I have a bit of an ecclectic taste when it comes to movies. One night I'll be watching Cujo and the next I'll be watching Dumbo, so although I'm easily amused I can also be hard to please. However this is my favorite movie, since the first time I watched it in a hotel on a family holiday. I have watched it many, many times since then and it has stood the test of time. The characters are acted out perfectly by the stunning cast, the writing is funny and sharp and although slightly dated with the terms, you still understand exactly what they mean. It is based on a short story written by Stephen King which explains why the writing is so perfect and although the thought of four boys going out to find a dead boy may sound slightly morbid the movie is not, it is simply a story about growing up. This movie is a must watch. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Buy! A beautifully put together classic that has touched the hearts of millions. Based on the novella 'The Body' by Stephen King, its no wonder why the story is so well written. In the film, four 12-year-olds set out in search of a dead body. If you think the plot sound bland, it isn't. The actors all portrayed their rolls extremly well. You'll laugh, you'll cry, this is a movie you must buy.

Set in 1959, this is the story of four adolescent boys living in a small Oregon town. Gordie, whose adult reminiscences trigger the flashback, regales his pals with imaginative and outrageous stories; his best buddy, Chris, has hardened his image in order to hide the pain he feels inside from physical abuse at home. The other two in the group are Vern, the pudgy tag-along who's the butt of everyone's jokes, and Teddy, the crazy kid whose psychotic Dad is locked away in a mental hospital. Together the four misfits embark on an adventure, venturing deep into the woods in an attempt to find the corpse of a missing teenager. The kids hope their discovery will make them town heroes, but a gang of high school bullies, who have plans of their own for the body, threatens to destroy their dreams. During the course of their two day odyssey, the four boys make a symbolic journey into young adulthood. And nothing in their lives will ever be the same.

This drama set in Oregon in 1959 portrays the friendship of four boys who go on an overnight camping trip to find a missing teenager's body, ultimately finding out more about themselves. Based on the novella "The Body" by Stephen King. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Adapted) Screenplay.
