This wonderful 1999 comedy, directed by Spike Lee`s brother Malcolm Lee, stars the talented Taye Diggs. Harper (Diggs) is an aspiring young writer who`s about to hit the big time with his latest book. He heads to New York to serve as the best man at his best-friend`s wedding. While he and his buddies catch up on old times, an ambitious female reporter circulates an advance copy of his new book to the group in the hopes of catching an early interview. It soon becomes apparent the novel is very closely related to their own lives and could end up revealing some secrets they`d rather keep hidden. The Best Man is an entertaining, realistic look at growing up as an African-American Male.

Description

Impressive debut from Lee (Spike's cousin), which should easily lay to rest any charges of Hollywood nepotism. Diggs plays Harper, an author who's about to explode into the mainstream when he discovers that Oprah has chosen his new book for her book-of-the-month club. Leaving behind his commitment-hungry girlfriend Robin (Lathan), he heads to New York City to serve as best man for his friend Lance's wedding (Chestnut, smoothly slipping into his role as a football superstar). Once there, he reunites with the rest of his college circle: the girlfriend-whipped Murch (Perrineau), the aimless Quentin (Howard, who runs away with every scene he's in), and the professionally motivated Jordan, with whom Harper has always shared a mutual sexual attraction. As the weekend unfolds, each member of the group has their turn reading UNFINISHED BUSINESS, which Harper tries to keep away from Lance, for reasons that eventually introduce themselves. A funny, well-intentioned film that escapes its potential racial pigeonholing by concentrating on serious human issues. Lee has earned himself a rightful place in the director's chair.
