Synopsis

THE BUTCHER BOY, Neil Jordan's adaptation of Patrick McCabe's novel, is a bold, brash, and original romp through the life of a troubled young Irish boy.

Description

Neil Jordan's adaptation of Patrick McCabe's novel has an unnerving amount of happy energy and humor considering the topic at hand (a young juvenile delinquent who eventually commits a brutal murder). The lushly photographed Ireland, mixed with newcomer Owens' dead-on portrayal of the carefree youth, makes this an entertaining romp, even if one is aware throughout that the story is going to end on a brutal note. Watch for Sinead O'Connor's cameo as the Virgin Mary (in an apparent effort to offend the Catholic church even more than she already has).
