A small band of IRA terrorists carry out an elaborate plan to seize Jody, a black British soldier stationed in Northern Ireland, and hold him hostage. They demand that the British Army release a number of their comrades -- or Jody will not come out alive. While they await a decision, Fergus, the most reluctant member of the group, stands guard over the captive, and gradually the two men become friendly. Fergus even agrees that if anything should happen to Jody, he will go to London and see Dil, the soldier's girlfriend. When Jody does, in fact, die, Fergus reluctantly leaves Ireland to carry out his pledge. But Dil isn't quite what he expected... and soon Fergus has learned a valuable lesson about love, the deceptiveness of appearances, and the impossibility of leaving the past behind.
