A band of American scientists working in Antarctica find that a group of Norwegians at a neighboring post have been mysteriously and violently killed, apparently in connection with a spaceship found frozen in the ice. After this grisly discover, the Americans return to their own camp, followed by one of the Norwegians' dogs. The animal behaves strangely, but the unwary scientists don't realize that this signals the presence of "The Thing" -- a shape-shifting alien bent on devouring any living creature it encounters.

Synopsis

A band of American scientists working in Antarctica find that a group of Norwegians at a neighboring post have been mysteriously and violently killed, apparently in connection with a spaceship found frozen in the ice. After this grisly discover, the Americans return to their own camp, followed by one of the Norwegians' dogs. The animal behaves strangely, but the unwary scientists don't realize that this signals the presence of "The Thing" -- a shape-shifting alien bent on devouring any living creature it encounters.

Description

A group of scientists doing research in the Antarctic unearth an alien life form which had been frozen for a hundred thousand of years. The alien has the ability to possess and mutate any living thing, including people.

Notes

"The Thing" was based on the short story "Who Goes There?" By John W. Campbell Jr. It was previously the basis for the 1951 film, "The Thing (from Another World)," which was produced by Howard Hawks and directed by Christian Nyby. This 1982 version is more loyal to the source material and restores the creature's ability to masquerade as any living creature. Production company: Turman-Foster Company. Filmed in Technicolor and Panavision. Additional cast: Nate Irwin (as helicopter pilot) and William Zeman (pilot).
