Jacques Demy's tender and bittersweet musical focuses on a young couple who, in their innocence, believe that love can overcome all obstacles. Then the boy is drafted, and must go away... and the sweethearts learn a difficult, life-altering lesson about the nature of romance in the real world. Shot on location in Cherbourg, France, this film is a blaze of bright colors and small-town charm. The dialogue is entirely sung, resulting in a work of almost heartbreaking beauty.

Description

The delightful, fancifully told story of a forbidden love between a shop girl and a mechanic in prewar Cherbourg, France. The all-musical performances are supported by a fine score by Michel Le Grand. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best (Original) Story and Screenplay, Best Song ("I Will Wait for You").

Notes

The film has no spoken dialogue. A Madeleine-Parc-Beta Films production. Color by Eastmancolor. Shot on location in Cherbourg, France. For about 20 years, the film was only available in faded prints. However, a three-strip negative print was discovered in an archive and Jaques Demy's widow, Agnes Varda, had the movie restored with funding provided by the French Ministry of Culture. In addition, Michel Legrand supervised a new, Dolby stereo remixing of the soundtrack. The restored version of the film was released theatrically by Zeitgeist Films in New York City April 5, 1996.
