Inspired by a 14th Century ballad, "The Virgin Spring" tells the story of a father's vengeance, while exploring themes of innocence and guilt. Karin, a young virgin, sets off on a ritual journey to church, adorned in a rich, costly gown. Along the way, she encounters three herdsmen, two of whom rape and kill her. The herdsmen continue their wanderings, and arrive at Karin's home. Unaware of the family's identity, the trio lodges there for the night. But the father learns of their deed, and slaughters all three -- including the youngest innocent boy, who all along has been horrified by his companions' brutality. When the heartbroken father claims his child's body, a miracle springs forth from the earth.
