Blues in the Night is a sampler of mainstream, edges-off contemporary blues cuts, most of which are too tired-sounding to even keep one awake in the daytime, let alone the night. The tone here is an almost constant weary malaise, and few of these tracks has any real bite, although Charles Brown's "Black Night" has a jazzy elegance, Wilson Pickett's tale of regret and struggle, "It's Harder Now," feels at least honest, and Aretha Franklin can't keep the gospel out of "Nobody Knows the Way I Feel This Morning," which is good for the listener, since almost everything else here falls to the bland side of things. If the blues is just about feeling sorry and sad, then this compilation has it nailed. If the blues, however, is about staring into one's soul and facing down the devil, then most of these cuts would have one snoozing well before that moment of truth ever arrives. ~ Steve Leggett
