This album was the second of three that Bowie made while in exile in East Berlin. Containing a song named after the quarter he lived in, "Neuköln," Heroes featured further collaboration with Brian Eno on keyboards and all things synthesized. King Crimson's Robert Fripp, who would later partner up with the Bowie-like David Sylvian, also contributed his prominent guitar work. The highlight of this album is the title track, a yearning song about love amid a country's oppression. Using variously placed microphones in the studio, the mix on this song heightens the emotion. The remastered version here also adds the impact and enhanced elements provides listeners with passage on to various music Web sites, including Bowie's elaborate page.

Editorial Notes

This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, various instruments); Brian Eno (various instruments); Carlos Alomar, Robert Fripp (guitar); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (drums, percussion); Tony Visconti, Antonia Maass (background vocals). Principally recorded at Hansa By The Wall, Berlin, Germany. Originally released on RCA (2522). The Germanic feel of this album is not surprising, as Bowie recorded it in Berlin during his infatuation with the city. It was a much more lively affair than Low and has the benefit of a title track that remains one of his best ever songs (in addition to excellent contributions from Fripp and Eno). `Beauty And The Beast' was difficult to accept as a single, yet it works as the album's opener. `Sense Of Doubt' is the opposite of `Heroes' - dark and moody, as is `Neukoln'. Even through the doom and gloom, this is an important Bowie album, and one to which critics return time and time again
