Legend of Johnny Cash

Performers Johnny Cash

Hip-O | November 1, 2005 | Compact Disc

Legend of Johnny Cash is rated 5 out of 5 by 2.
Not to be confused with the LEGEND box set released around the same time in 2005, THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH is the first single-disc compilation to span the country icon's entire recorded career. Although whittling Cash's massive catalogue down to a single disc is virtually futile, the Hip-O label has done an admirable job, resulting in a well-chosen 21-track history of the late Man in Black.
THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH begins with the singer/songwriter's initial 1950s studio sessions for the revered Sun Records--"Cry! Cry! Cry!" and "Hey Porter"--which confidently introduced the world to Cash's distinctive deep vocals and spare, "boom-chicka-boom" sound. While other career-defining Sun singles are present (most notably, "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line"), Cash's decades with Columbia and his brief stint with Mercury are quickly skimmed over in favor of the numerous tracks from his lauded '90s/'00s American recordings. Stand-outs from that era include his haunting reworking of "Delia's Gone," the swaggering "I've Been Everywhere," and his minimal take on "The Man Comes Around." Though longtime Cash fans will already own most of this material, the collection works wonderfully as a concise introduction to his near-mythic career.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent Cash collection An absolutely excellent collection of some of the late Johnny Cash's songs that any Cash fan will love - or for that person who is making their first foray into his music. It starts out with a few tunes like "Cry! Cry! Cry!" and "Hey Porter" both recorded in 1955 at Sun Studios in Memphis and winds it way through his career ending with his stark and haunting version of the NIN hit "Hurt". Johnny Cash was a believable singer...in that I mean he put his soul into his songs, not just mouthed the words. There have been few artists that I can say have really done that and this CD captures the legend and talent of Cash beautifully. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Ultimate Collection! Whether you're a new fan, or old, or if you're looking to buy your first Cash CD, this is the perfect collection. It covers his whole career, every song (except one: Highwayman ) is a winner and they have all been remastered for great sound! On this one CD, you get selections from the early days like CRY CRY CRY, FOLSOM PRISON BLUES, BIG RIVER and GET RHYTHM, then it's on to RING OF FIRE, JACKSON, MAN IN BLACK, and the incredible SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN. Even his work with U2 is here in THE WANDERER. Then it's off to fine selections from the classic Cash albums with Rick Rubin producing. Right up until the last closing song, which will give you chills. Old, sick, dying, Cash turns HURT into a stirring, powerful, moving account of addiction and its consequences. This CD is ultimate Cash. It doesn't contain every good song. You'll need a box set if you're looking for that. But for an affordable CD with great, classic tunes, this is the one for you. And, for the new fan, start here. You'll get a taste for this music legend and you'll want to hear more. An aboslutely great CD!!
