The LOVE BOAT singer drops anchor at 10 musical ports, each one different from the rest, but all intimate and playful. The arrangements, whether rhythm accompaniments or full orchestrations, provide swinging support, and frame Jack Jones' relaxed, almost conversational belting. They're rhythmically daring, with a good variety of material.
"She's Leaving Home," finds Jones playing up a drowsy and minor vocal that's very different to the Beatles' version. There's a comparable quality to Sinatra when he swings "All or Nothing at All" and "Mack the Knife," but Jones retains his own, unique identity, bringing the songs to life with rhythmical combinations of quiet understatement and gravelly blues. The last track, "Love Boat Theme," is quirkier and friendlier than the TV version. Here, Jones rocks the boat with his freewheeling sense of jazz.
