The birth, growth and continuing wild years of rock required many great guardians. David Bowie was one of the best parents of rock, encouraging it to experiment and explore. As part of a re-release campaign by EMI, a remastered and enhanced version of Bowie's Space Oddity, reappears in 1999. "Space Oddity" is a defining moment in pop, a strange story about a spaceman trapped in his vessel high above the Earth who talks to a controller down below. As listeners hear Major Tom's desperate reports, Bowie creates a glam-inflected drama out of a simple acoustic song and proves his own brilliance in doing so.
