Gospel groups have got soul. Think of Al Green. And while you’re at it, you can think of The Blind Boys of Alabama as well. This album shows just how much soul they got. Spirit of the Century includes covers of some great gospel-inspired rock tunes – kind of a repatriation of these songs. They do the classic “Just Wanna See His Face” from the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street. Two songs, “Way Down in the Hole” and “Jesus Gonna Be Here” from the Tom Waits songbook and Ben Harper – “Give a Man a Home” – shows this band has thought deeply about the spiritual significance of some rock today. With a cast of great studio musicians, including guitarist John Hammond, this record praises God as Christians understands the deity, but it celebrates the power of music to move you too. And that’s something all can enjoy.
