Full title: The Best Of The Capitol Masters: 90th Birthday Edition.
This is a compilation of the best songs contained on the Les Paul box set, THE LEGEND AND THE LEGACY.
Les Paul & Mary Ford: Mary Ford (vocals); Les Paul (guitar).
Producer: Les Paul
Compilation Producer: Rob Christie.
Liner Note Author: Les Paul.
In the 1940s, prior to the arrival of rock & roll, the music world was already experiencing a notable transition. Guitar pioneer Les Paul was on the forefront of this change by turning away from jazz and instead focusing on pop hits. In these days, "pop" often combined slick country & Western with swing. For example, "Lover" and "Nola," both featured on this 20-track collection, are blazing country-tinged tracks that show off Paul's virtuosity and conceptual brilliance.
These tunes (and others presented here) are unique for the time, due to Paul's use of multi-tracking technology. In fact, he was one of the first musicians to use the studio as an instrument. Innovations aside, Paul simply made wonderful music with vocalist Mary Ford. Selections such as the Mexican influenced "Vaya Con Dios (May God Be with You)," the country ballad "Tennessee Waltz," and the bluesy "I'm a Fool to Care" are romantic love songs that feature the subtle and gossamer voice of Ford. Many of these vocal tunes anticipate the work of Patsy Cline and showcase the remarkable talents of both Ford and Paul.
