Demon Hunter is Christian metal's big, big band. And they should be, because by anybody's standard they shred. Triptych is their breakthrough album, a well-produced, sledgehammer-and-drill feat for bleeding ears. They are one of progressive metal's great hopes as they blend thrash, alt metal, death metal and melodic elements of folk and (un)black metal. They've transcended the tiresome comparisons to Pantera, Slipknot, Sepultura and Slayer. They have come into their own on Triptych. The songwriting here is knotty and sophisticated; melodies and bone-crushing riffs collide and finally meld, guitars and well-chosen blastbeats find stop and start moments to push the song structure along, and the lyrics are uniformly great. The unexpected anthemic choruses in tracks like "Undying" find a rapped verse line standing in stark contrast to the riffing and lyricism in the refrains. In "Fire to My Soul," it's all overdrive and crunch. Yet "Deteriorate" is as beautiful a ballad as you're likely to find on a metal recording and showcases, dare we say it, an uncompromised, sensitive side of the band -- without sentimentality or artifice. Triptych rocks, and extends the band's creative reach a few levels; hopefully they get their own respect from here on out. In addition, the deluxe edition of Triptych comes with great extras including bonus cuts that include acoustic versions of "My Throat Is an Open Grave," "My Heartstrings Come Undone," and "The Tide Began to Rise," as well as a remix of "Undying." There is also a DVD loaded with material from interviews with bandmembers, a full-on, multi-angle concert, and a documentary on the making of the video for "One Thousand Apologies." Get it. ~ Thom Jurek
