My Kobo Touch failed within 3 months ... Now Chapters wont look after me. I have to deal directly with Kobo. They are very challenging to deal with. I feel cheated .... DO NOT BUY THIS!!

Maybe use google, and not post tech support questions in the comment section.

The screen will never go totally black. The cover of the book you are currently reading will always be on the screen.

Can we use this space for actual product reviews, please? The ratings become meaningless when people use this for customer service or tech support instead of actual feedback.

They are also $99 in store at Chapters or Coles

The iRewards member discount does not apply to ereaders, according to the FAQ.

Hi, I'd like to know how long they will be $99 for. I'm planning to get one with the indigo cards my kids gave me for Mother's Day! Am I too late? Janet

The reader is wonderful but be prepared for frustration if you require customer assistance. I bought two readers and wish I had saved my money and used the app on my iPad instead.

My boyfriend bought me my Touch back in September. I had been putting off buying an e-Reader for over 2 years, unsure of if I really wanted to take the step - I love holding a book in my hands so I was very hesitant to give that up. Let me just say, I don't know why I didn't do it sooner! I love that its so small and compact and I can have my hundred of books with me wherever I go. I didn't give the Touch 5 leaves because of a few minor details, one I have a tiny black spot on my screen that wont go away, it just showed up one day out of the blue for no reason (I have a case and have never dropped it) but I've gotten used to it, two, when I am on the web browser for some reason I am unable to navigate away from my homepage (which is set up for facebook). And finally I find that sometimes I have to tap the screen once or twice extra to change the page which then causes it to turn that many pages, thankfully its not often so its not that bothersome. Personally I absolutely love this! No problems whatsoever (other than those mentioned)

I've had it for about a year now and I've been using it almost every day. It's great for long bus rides on commutes to and from my university. It's also been a nice change since I tend to read multiple books at a time and it often left me carrying multiple books in a giant purse but now I don't need to do that so it's been quite the improvement. I haven't had any problems with it at all! I prefer it to the new tablet-like ereaders that have come out because this one is lighter :) I've saved a lot of money with this ereader so it's pretty much already paid for itself! I always spent a LOT of money of books, but now I buy ebooks so they're significantly cheaper and quite the money saver :) I've found some of the same ebooks cheaper off the kindle bookstore so I've used a program called calibre to put them on my ereader so that's another way to save money too ;) The Sony pocket ereader is also a good one, my friend has it and I've used it too so I'd definitely recommend one of the two :)
    Good luck!

I bought the WiFi e-reader in March 2011. I have enjoyed it immensely, especially at the beach ..previous years I was bringing a minimum of 10 paperbacks in the suitcase. I have had no problems with it until recently. I have over 500 books in my library(bought and free) and over 500 in a 4GB SD memory card downloaded from other sources.. All was fine until about 2 weeks ago when the WiFi did not process the additonal books I transferred in the SD card. I have been corresponding with the Help desk and their solution is to delete the books in the library to free up the WiFi internal memory so that the SD card can be processed. I do not find that this is the solution. Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

    Kobo Touch a disappointment

    Shell

My Kobo Touch is 3 months old and the wireless has quit working. I have done a basic reset and 2 factory resets with no success. Waiting for a response and solution from Kobo. I decided on the Kobo E-reader in part because of it's affiliation with Chapters but am now questioning why Chapters wants to promote this item. Perhaps there is a reason the Touch is now being offered at a reduced price?!

The reason the Touch has been discounted hasn't been shared, but the WiFi version went on sale this time last year and the Touch was released about six weeks later. I expect the same thing to happen this year. I recently had a hardware failure, with a Touch I bought last June. Within 48 hours of writing to help@kobobooks.com they has determined that I had to send it back. It was replaced quickly. Although I wish it hadn't broken, this seems to happen with tech devices--expensive ones, too. I am very pleased with the customer service Kobo provided.

I had my KOBO touch for under 2 months when it stalled and wouldn't open up - I went to the store where it was purchased but was told that I needed to contact Kobo customer service. While I agree that the first person I spoke to was very nice and helpful on the phone I CANNOT say the same about the ones I spoke to via email. First I found out that I needed to pay for (an item not even two months old ) to have it shipped to them. Then I was sent a refurbished kobo in replacement of my orginal less than 2 month old device - that's there policy I was told. they couldn't even tell me what was wrong with mine in the first place. When I told them by email that it takes me a few times to close or open the refurbished one no one even emailed me back. The touch screen when connected to my wireless doesn't even work properly but I don't really care at this point I don't ever want to speak to the Kobo people again and if anyone asks I will tell them to buy the AMAZON KINDLE ..

Have you called and asked to have the situation escalated? I know you shouldn't have to ask for a supervisor to get great service, but sometimes it is your best bet not to end up frustrated. I know from experience that supervisors not only have a better idea of how to fix the problem, they are more likely to take your frustration seriously, and do what the can to alleviate it in a timely manner. Just an idea.

Hi Caroline, If you could provide me with a Kobo Customer Service incident number I would be happy to bring this to Kobo's attention. Thanks, Jane

    Caroline Larosa

Hi Jane, Here is the incedent number: [Incident: 120209-001073] I'm not really happy about the fact that I needed to pay to have the item fixed after owning it for under two months plus the fact that I got a refurbished unit and no explanation as to what was orginally wrong with mine. I can live with the one I have except that the wi-fi browser doesn't seem to log me into anything when I touch the screen - I'm pretty sure that's not normal (I didn't go back to kobo C/S with this issue honestly I has slightly upset about getting a refurbished unit in place of my brand new one - it didn't seem fair to me.) so I just left it alone.

I've read a lot of complaints about the device itself and certainly about the very poor customer service. I cannot speak to the latter because I can speak to the former.

That is, I've had my Kobo Touch since October 2011 and haven't experienced a single problem, not in the set up, not in using it, not in its performance, not in using it with a third party free ebook management program, not in firmware updates. It's worked perfectly. It's a gem. I love it and am grateful to have this excellent device and thank my family for the wonderful gift.

    Love My Kobo... But...

    CKDL

I have had my Kobo Touch for almost a year. It has given me no problems. In the beginning it had "ghosting" issues but that was resolved by an update and so I carried on. A few days ago, I updated my Kobo with the latest update. The update was supposed to make page turns "better" - like there was a problem in the first place! As well as other issues that I had never experienced. Since the update, I have experienced problems. It freezes. I try to turn a page and it puts it into "dictionary mode" and then I can't close this mode. Putting it into sleep mode doesn't solve the problem. I have to shut it off completely and turn it back on. This is very annoying when I'm in the middle of reading as it does take some time to reboot.

I like my Kobo and so I'm hoping that there will be another update that will fix the mess that was made with the last update!

Hello Kim, My Kobo Touch froze many times after the v1.19.16 upgrade. Then I had to re-start my kobo touch. It would prompt me to upgrade, an already installed upgrade. I had to send an email to kobo help support and in the end, I had to do a factory re-set. This seemed to fix the freezing on my unit. Also go to: getsatisfaction.com - it's a community board for Kobo owners. There is alot of helpful info there. Good Luck !!

    CKDL

Thanks, Lorna! I was wondering where a good community support board was for Kobo. Ugh! I really don't need want to do a factory reset. I did one before and it was kind of a pain and it turned out (I think) that it wasn't the Kobo that was the problem. But if I have to, I guess I have to but I'll wait to see if the next update does something.

    Don't go Kobo

    Tammy Belliveau

I have an original Kobo and then was given a Touch as a birthday present. I read for the first little bit without problems however one day, without warning, it stopped working. Everytime I turned it on it would put me through the steps of initializing it again (wanting to be plugged into the computer etc.). After weeks of waiting for customer service to call me (apparently the Tier 2 people can't be contacted by you, which should be a giant red flag to potential customers right there) they finally got back to me and had me mail the Touch to them. In return they mailed me another Touch that.... was broken too. After getting the runaround again for weeks I gave up trying to get a resolution. The latest was that I needed to get some other software for my computer that was going to fix this - and they told me I was lucky to have a new Touch sent to me instead of a refurbished one when I dared to mention that they sent the wrong colour. Really? I pick out one colour in the store and when it breaks you send me whatever you want?? The whole experience has left me wanting nothing to do with Chapters (who wouldn't help at all except to tell me that Kobo is a different company, complain to them at this number).

    Comments on this review:
    Jessica Ford

From what I know, Kobo sells their e-readers through Chapters and Indigo in Canada, and Borders in the US (before Borders closed down, that is). Chapters sells the Kobo for Kobo, as opposed to Kobo opening its own stores and selling their e-reader there. They are two companies working together. It makes complete sense that Chapters has no support for Kobo customers considering the fact that they are a different company. It's not that they don't want to help customers, they actually can't.

    Meaghan Rothwell

I sympathize with you however I am inclined to agree with Jess on the fact that it's not that Chapters doesn't want to help it is that they are unable to. I work for a cell phone distributor and have come across this issue a few times with customers having issues with their Iphones, as a sales associate it is frustrating knowing that we are unable to provide customer service to those clients that require help. But your frustrations are justified.

    Worst device ever

I have posted a few times in response to other people having problems.
Jane was friendly enough to ask for my incident number, but it has been months now and still no solution!
My advice: **Do Not Buy KOBO!!** Get any other device, but not a Kobo! I have never experienced any worse customer service!

Have had my Kobo Touch since October 2011. Not one problem. Perfect. Love it. Best e-reader I've had. Haven't needed customer support but the one time I asked a question the response was quick and helpful. My advice, Do not take the above review as gospel.

    Daniel Delattre

I am truly very happy that your device works really well! Sadly enough that does not make my device turn on again... nor does it provide any better customer support for those who have issues with Kobo.

    Owen Swain

Quite true. My point was not to take away from your disappointing experience and it's silly to think my experience could somehow change your own. My point was simply to affirm the positive experience I've had as one experience with a product is not every customer experience. People can draw their own conclusions then which may or may not be to "not buy Kobo." Best regards and happy ereading on whatever device suits you.

    Bad CS, no Wi-Fi

    Ron Guest

4 months of emails and in the last month they sent me a refurb unit for my brand new one that still had customer's private info on it. Exchanged for a new one after twittering the CEO for action, none of the units have been able to connect to Windows 7 Wi-Fi network. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! (it often takes 24 hours to call up a library list if I put more than 1K books on it, a far cry from their claim of 30K capability)

    Comments on this review:

I thought I was the only one having issues with the Wi Fi .. it connects but I can't really do anything - I can launch the browser but it does me no good as I can't activate any website. Plus I also got a refurbished unit for my 2 month old one .. that's there policy I was told plus they couldn't even tell me what was wrong with mine in the first place.

    Great Product and Service

We now have 2 Kobo Touch's in our household and they are both in constant use. Admit I have had a couple freeze ups but simply turning the reader off and back on has returned full functionality. I created a problem with my account when I tried to set up the second kobo and in spite of me being the cause the customer support was very quick to help resolve both on phone and over e-mail. Only tricky at this point is Kobo (understand from someone else Sony is similar) does not seem to have anticipated the possibility of 2 people using the same computer and e-mail address each wanting a Kobo with individual libraries. I needed a second e-mail address to solve the account problem but can only have one copy of Kobo desk top on our computer. This means time delays because it means each of our libraries needs to be downloaded to the desktop each time. This may be exacerbated by our slower internet connection and by fact we have different reading interests so have completely different libraries. Hopefully at some point will be able to have two separate Kobo desktops on same computer. Beyond that fantastic product and great experience with customer service to date.

I loved my Kobo touch until it broke, 4 months in. Moderate use and very well cared for, then one day the screen froze. After that it all went downhill. They have the worst customer service I have ever encountered. It took me well over a month to get any response, speaking to someone live was a nightmare, not only did it take major hoop jumping, they were rude and not the least bit helpful. The end result was that I had to pay to return it with no guarantee of fix or replacement. They took 6 weeks to get to this decision and then closed my ticket when they didn't recieve the product within 5 days of sending me the email. I would not reccomend this product. It has known issues and the COMPANY DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. Shameful. Indigo/Chapters is no help either. Be warned.
