"This wonderful book is a carefully composed collection of moments during one of those days when parents experience exasperation. Rachna Gilmore, a talented author, magically captures a child''s overbrimming love of life and irrepressible spirit of mischief and rebellion. This is not abook with a message; rather, it is a sweet story told in exquisite fashion. A Screaming Kind of Day is an engaging, "singing in the rain" book which children will love to read."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Award Winning Day in the Rain Scully is a charming girl who squabbles with her brother and disobeys her mother in her quest to play outside in the rain. As a child with hearing aids she describes the sound of colours, the smell, and the feel of the day in the rain so vividly that you want to run and play in the rain alongside her. Scully is a character all of the kids adore and those with hearing aids can relate to. The stunning illustrations by Gordon Sauve are as special as the story by Rachna Gilmore. A Screaming King of Day is a winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A beautiful story This is simply a beautiful story. Rachna Gilmore has managed to remember the unique way children use their senses to enjoy nature. I've read this book to groups of children of varying ages, and they've sat mesmerized. The illustrations are wonderful, too. Good Luck, Ms. Gilmore, I hope you win the Governer General's Award for this one, it deserves it.

About the Book

Scully, a young hearing-impaired girl, wants to play outside in the rain, away from her brother Leo and her busy mother. She loves to feel the sensation of the rain running over her face. After escaping briefly to the wet green trees outside, she is grounded and not allowed to leave the house for a day. As evening approaches, Scully and her mother are able to share a special moment together watching the stars.
