Rated 5 out of 5 by from comforting and challenging This book inspired my daughter to wear a daisy costume for Halloween (thankfully avoiding the ubiquitous princess costume for another year!) and so was worth it for this alone. Though I was cautious at first, I now really appreciate that Henkes books, including Chrysanthemum, deal with the reality that not all kids are nice (or at least, not all the time!) I think its comforting for little ones to see reflected in a book that is read at home, where it is safe, the behaviour they see in thier schools and playgrounds. The gentle teasing in this book is the kind of thing that particularly upsets my rather sensitive and independent girl, and I appreciated this book's handling of it (feeling good about yourself, that grown-ups can help). It isn't painfully didactic or moralistic, as some kids books are, and further entertains through lively prose and engaging pictures. A must have for any children's library.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from chrysanthemum my daughter first had this story read to her at three and it's still a favourite at almost-five. it's funny and not afraid to use big words and a big message. it teaches kids that it's all right to be different. what i love most though is the language. kevin henkes uses just the right word, even if it's not usually in a toddler's vocabulary. my daughter has learned so many words from this story, which she uses every day. overall, just a delightful book. i've given copies to four other girls, who also loved it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What's in a Chrysanthemum? A lot! This little book teaches you to embrace your differences and uniqueness. Given the number of out there children's names these days this book's plot can be read at face value, or it can be generally applied to self-esteem building and the acceptance of others. Chrysanthemum is a sweet little mouse in a sweet little book.

What’s in a name? A great deal if your name is ‘Chrysanthemum’! The little girl in this Kevin Henkes’ story must endure the ridicule of her school chums as they joke and giggle about her name. Chrysanthemum is quite confused about the teasing, but she’s no wallflower -- she’ll find a way to get through this little predicament. Chrysanthemum is an ideal story for kids heading off to school for the first time.
