Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from interesting take on Cinderella story Ella of Frell is fifteen years old and lives with her father, Sir Peter, and mother Lady Eleanor, their cook Mandy, and other servants in the kingdom of Kyrria, ruled over by King Jerrold and Queen Daria, who are the parents of Prince Charmont (Char). At her birth, the foolish fairy Lucinda gave Ella the gift of obedience, but it turns out to be a curse because she must automatically obey every order given to her regardless of what it is, whether hopping on one foot for a day or even chopping off her own head. After Lady Eleanor dies, Sir Peter marries the odious Dame Olga, who has two equally odious daughters, Hattie and Olive. Then her father promptly leaves on a business trip. In the meantime, Ella and Char have fallen in love, but Ella knows that she can’t marry him while under the curse, so she goes on a quest, encountering ogres and giants, in order to break the spell. Will she succeed? Or will the Prince find another bride? Ella Enchanted, which was a Newbery honor book in 1998, is Levine’s take on the traditional Cinderella story, giving her own explanation of how the heroine came to have a wicked stepmother and stepsisters, ended up becoming a servant, and is finally chosen by the Prince. One could see the book as making fun of the traditional vows of brides to “love, honor, and obey” their husbands. Or one could view it simply as showing that obedience doesn’t, or shouldn’t, necessarily reduce a person to mere chattel slavery. Each reader will have to decide that for himself. There are references to drinking wine, brandy, and ale. And, of course, whenever you have princely balls, you are going to have mention of dancing. In 2006, Levine went on to write Fairest, a retelling of the Snow White story, set in the same world as Ella Enchanted. The plot of Ella is presented in an interesting way, though it will probably appeal much more to little “princesses” rather than little “princes.” It is easy to read, and I basically enjoyed it, but like several others, I thought the book really couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a hip “modern day fairy tale” or a traditional medieval-type story. It seems to bounce back and forth almost willy-nilly between the two moods. While it is not a bad book, I have to wonder why it was chosen for a Newbery Honor award. The reason is probably that, as one reviewer called it an “examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales,” it presents “a spunky, intelligent female lead” that is quite in tune with the modern feminist ideal. A movie was made in 2004 that was very loosely based on the book, and some people expressed the opinion that the film was less disjointed and confusing than the novel, though it is quite different in many respects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless classic I am now 25 years old and still I treasure this book. I absolutely refuse to see the film beause the trailer was enough to convince me that they took this book and changed far too much of it. If you've ever been a fan of fairytales or you want to enchant your own daughters with a good one... this is it! It's a delightful read and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Charming Tale I have to admit that I saw the movie first and although they are at least 80% different I liked them both. Ella is a charming girl who must face numerous obstacles with her "disability". Her father, step mother and step sisters are real pieces of work that you love to loath. Looking forward to when my daughter is old enough that I can read this to her.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magical When Ella was born, she was cursed by a fairy named Lucinda. She gave her the "gift" of obedience. Whatever she is told to do, Ella is forced to obey. When Ella's mother passes away, she lives with her father, stepmother, and two stepsisters. Ella is very intelligent, and longs for freedom. She goes off on her own to try and find Lucinda, in order for her to have a life. And of course, this fairy tale story has a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and the "happily ever after" ending. This book is a great version of Cinderella, well written and very cleaver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this book!!!!!!! This book is SOOO great! I read up to chapter 3 once in Grade 3, and I didn't like it, but now 4 years later... I can probably say that this is one of my favourite books! Ella lives with her mom and cook, Mandy, and eventually her dad. After her dad gets remarried and travels, leaving Ella at home with her new stepfamily, they force Ella to be their slave because they discovered that she had to obey them. At first, ( First 5 chapters) It is boring, but when everything that happens after that happens... Omigosh, I almost cried reading this it is so wonderful. This book is funny, sad, enchanting, and well, read it to find out. I love books, and this one's great!!!!!!! READ IT!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Spellbinding Fantasy!" Gail Levine's "Ella Enchanted" brings in a world of magic, with a load of adventures. This book is a 'once -you -start -you- can't -stop' book. Perfectly suitable for youths. A full-time fairy tale with imagination, creativity, and more. This book is a have-to-read for all fantasy lovers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Childhood favourite, and since then too! I first read this when I was nine, and many years later - I still adore it! It's my go-to comfort book, the one that always makes me smile. I wore my first copy down because I read it so much, and was forced to buy another one! Levine has a way of making her characters come alive on the pages, I'd never before thought that a fairy tale could have so much depth! Between Ella, Char, Mandy, and Hattie - every reader has tons to laugh (and even cry) at. Levine's story is very humourous, and despite the fantasy element - very realistic. She adds great twists to an old classic, that allows this story to remain fresh. Even if you think youknow Cinderella, you still have stuff to learn. You'll never see Cinderella the same way again! Ella is portrayed as a quasi-normal teen who just wants to fit in. She feels restrained and tied down, and longs to be free. My advice: don't watch the movie. Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy are talented actors, but the screenwriter's have ruined the novel completely. If you've already seen the movie - ignore everything, and get this book! Give Ella another chance. And like I mentioned, if you haven't seen the film - don't! You'll prefer the book, I guarantee it. This is an amazing book will attract any child, and will continue to be loved by them straight into adulthood!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It This book is so great. It's a twist on Cinderella and if you like fairy tale-like books slightly re-made then I highly recommend this book. It's not a heavy read, it's fairly straight forward but I love it nonetheless. The movie didn't do this book justice and I think that just about every Ella Enchanted fan who saw the movie will agree with me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from staying in my collection forever The first time i picked this book up was when i was in grade 6 at my school book fair.. I have been able to come back to it again and again to enjoy the adventures of ella and watch her grow into a women in this charming story. After reading this I don't think the original Cinderella story will ever be the same! So despite your age or skeptism on this lovely story.. try it and you will see why it has such great reviews... all our inhibitions and doubts as we grow up and learn are reflected in all the misadventures and comical sequence of events Ella goes through to find her ultimate happiness and the love of her life. This is definitely a must- have to pass on to every woman!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ella Enchanted Ella Enchanted is a wonderful story of a teenager going through the not so normal happenings of adolescence.A gift bestowed at birth turns out to be more of a curse, ogres, and finnishing what else can go wrong? One word. Hattie. An evil girl who tries to take advantage of Ella's obedience, and take away someone VERY important to her, more than once.I also forgot to mention giants, fairies, and balls. This book is filled with humour, and seriousness. Well, maybe not alot of seriousnes, but some. There is also a prince charming! Need I say more? This book is absolutely wonderful for any girls room, even if you're not a big reader. Two thumbs up for ELLA ENCHANTED!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Twisted Fairytales Make Great Stories While it’s been a few years since I’ve read it, I still remember how charmed I was with such an interesting twist to the Cinderella storyline. I recently saw another girl with the book, and remembering how much I enjoyed Ella’s spunky personality, I decided to go out and buy the book for my younger sister. I ended up here, hoping it was still in print. It was, and I haven’t received such good news in a while. Definitely a recommended read, even if you take it out of a library first to see whether it’s worth it. I couldn’t help but notice that some of the negative reviews are rather “Horrible book, go read (such-and-such)”. It’s a real shame, because both sides of the debate should be represented. So next time, please think about why it’s a bad book, for the sake of anyone trying to get real feedback. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing! gail carson levine does her best in this witty romantic tale about a young girl with a strange curse. It puts a captivating twist on an old story we know and love. I would strongly reccomend this book to anyone with an imagination and a love of reading. It was my all time favorite book for quite a while but was bumped behind Harry Potter and The two Princess' of bamarre which is also by Levine!! This book is now being made into a major motion picture and despite how pleased i was it kind of takes away the fantasy of the book. I hope you choose to read this and im sure youll love it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A New Twist on an Old Tale Ella Enchanted is probably the most eye-opening book for children since, well, there really wasn't anything that good as far as I can remember! Ella is a girl that has been subjected to the horrible fate of being put under a curse to be obedient to any and every command given her. Parents out there are probably thinking that's too good to believe, but hooooold on a minute. Being COMPLETELY obedient at all times, Ella is under the threat that any foul-hearted person may come and command her to do all sorts of horrible tasks. Read about a girl that has a will of her own, even if she can't obey it, as she goes on a quest to find the fairy that made every minute of her life unbearable. As the end moves closer, you will begin to see the story unfold into a classic that we have known and loved since infancy, with a touch of romance to boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enchanting Ella Enchanted; the best book for a young child's(particularly a girl)book- shelf. I loved it. Being 11 years old, it was nice to have a book about someone my age. For a bit older readers, but enough fantasy for a read- aloud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A momentous book This is a momentous new version to the classic, "Cinderella". The characters are jocose and intresting. Ella is a 15-year-old girl who is cursed under a fairy's "gift" of oedience. Thus, Ella must obey any command directed towards her. Even though it may sound like an unusual curse, it's amusing how Ella copes with anything she endeavors. When I first came upon this book, I thought it wouldn't be any different to the original tale. Yet, as I started to read it, I was enthralled with the plot and characters. From the cruel stepsisters to Ella's relationship with the prince, this book is astonishing. I highly recommend this book to anyone, young or old. Furthermore, this book also poses a problem: you can't read it just once! - Lisa Carter, age 11

When I first glanced at the title, I thought the book would be about the original tale. Yet, when I started to read it, I was engrossed. From the cruel stepsisters to the prince, this book is great! ( it's funny how she copes with the spell, or curse) This book also poses a problem: you can't just read it once! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, younge or old. - Lisa Carter, age 11

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Book The reason that this is my favourite book is that I love the way Ella reacts to other people, and she knows by looking at people how they would act. I think that this book is excellent for readers from the ages of 9 to 11. Its not too long, so it won't intimidate the young ones!! Peace out, read a lot and prosper. Sari

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pure and simple genius! I came across this book casually browsing the library shelves for a book to do a school report on, and decided to take it out. I have had to renew it twice so far, and I don't think I'll ever part with it. This book is very well-written, and it's a very fitting beginning to the Cinderella story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Fairytale! Ella Enchanted is full of imagination. This is my favourite book. You'll love the irony that Ella faces in her every day struggles. Did you notice the irony of the name Cinderella? Although it's like Cinderella, it explains it even more. I say they should make a movie!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ella Enchanted This delightful novel is more than just a retelling of the famous Cinderella story. It is about a young girl cursed with the “gift” of obedience bestowed upon her at birth by a capricious fairy. Throughout her childhood, Ella struggles to remain her own person while being forced to obey any command given her. Her eventual triumph — readers will cheer when it happens — is an encouragement to young girls everywhere to be true to themselves. Imaginative and engrossing, with characters that are real and sympathetic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Book Since I received it for my Birthday, I have read Ella Enchanted at least 10 times. It is now definitely my favourite novel! Although similar to the story of Cinderella, you never know what to expect with this book, which keeps you reading until the very end. The story is filled with magical creatures, interesting names, and amazing places. It makes you feel sad, angry or happy for Ella as she goes through life with the troubles brought upon her from the "gift" of obedience. Gail Carson Levine truly is an excelent author. She has written no other books that I've heard of so far, but I sure hope she does soon! I recommend Ella Ennchanted for anyone from the age of 8 to 12, or maybe even older. You'll love it!

From Our Editors

I have to say, of all the fantasy and fairytale books and stories that I have read, this one tops the list! Ella Enchanted is a beautifully and elegantly written adaptation of the classic Cinderella story, and really, I must say, it's the best one I've read so far.

The traditional love story, when put into Gail Carson Levine's mind for fantasy, is put in a much more comical sense, and the characters are so lovable! I simply adore Prince Char - he really is charming - and like, the perfect guy! And I really admire Ella for being so heroic - I told you I liked heroes!

This story, like most fairytales, has the perfect "happily ever after" ending and I love it! If anyone asked me for the perfect romantic fairytale, I would suggest this - wait, I already have!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being a fairy is never easy. Since her birth, Ella of Frell has been the unfortunate recipient of an addled fairy's gift -- the "gift" of obedience. However, spunky Ella does not tamely accept her fate and embarks on a quest to break this curse once and for all! Ella Enchanted is a nice addition to every young reader’s collections.
