by Kathy Stinson

Annick Press | September 12, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Red Is Best is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 4.

A modern classic that continues to prove no color is finer.

Young Kelly''s mom doesn''t understand about red. Sure, the brown mittens are warmer, but the red mitts make better snowballs. And the red boots aren''t just for rain; they take bigger steps in any weather. And, yes, a red cup does make a difference... juice just doesn''t taste as good in a green one. No doubt about it, red is best.

Kathy Stinson''s classic tale of one toddler''s obstinate color preference has been charming readers for 25 years. With over 275,000 copies in print, Red is Best has steadily marched its way to become a children''s book classic. Now a new generation of readers can discover Stinson''s insistent young heroine, aptly captured in the simple drawings of Robin Baird Lewis -- each one punctuated by the right dazzle of red.

With its plucky charm presented in a redesigned interior, and a special cover commemorating the book''s 25th anniversary, the re-release of Red is Best is sure to be a red-letter day.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For everyone who's Mom has never quite understood them! This book is brilliantly written from a kid's point of view (i.e. "juice tastes better in the red cup"), so all kids will enjoy it. I thought it was a nice touch that Kelly's mom lost patience about having everything red. That is SO true! And just for the record, my red sweater keeps me warmer, my red mitts make better snowballs, my red shoes make my feet dance, my red socks make my toes wiggle.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The trick is, growing old, without growing up! I really enjoyed the book Red is Best. Re-reading it after many years (for a project) I've come to realise that it speaks a universal truth. That everyone has that one thing they hold on to and it doesn't matter if nobody understands it's special to them and that's all that counts (My red barrettes make my hair laugh - Kathy Stinson). I highly recommend picking this book up, it will be as much fun for you as for the child/children you are reading it too. - I also still have that cereal bowl, that my cereal doesn't get soggy in and that blanket that keeps me warmer than any other.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Today's Parent Red Is Best , by Kathy Stinson, illustrated by Robin Baird Lewis, Annick, 1983. This is one of those books that is earmarked as a classic the moment it appears. Everything about it seems just right for a toddler - the length, the tone, the simple but evocative illustrations, and above all the way Stinson seems to get right inside a toddler's passion and understand what the mother in the story doesn't - specifically that "my red boots take bigger steps" and "red paint puts singing in my head."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Red is Best IS best. I'm sixteen years old and this is still one of my favourite books of all time. Because, really, you CAN make better snowballs wearing your red mittens. We all know it.
