Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a lovely collection... To start off, this book is beautiful. The cover is not tan, like it shows, but a deep forest green. It is a lot larger than your average book size, which means it doesn't quite fit on a normal book shelf. But wow, is it pretty. The pictures inside are gorgeously drawn and the script definitely gives it the perfect vibe for a fairytale novel. The stories inside, The Little Mermaid, being my all-time favorite, are fantastically written and translated. I've heard a lot of people say that Andersen's writing style nearly puts them to sleep, but I did not experience this at all. With his great attention to detail and description, along with his whimsical storylines that suit both child and adult minds, alike, I found this collection to be quite the treasure. My recommendation? You really can't get any better than Anderson when it comes to fairytales, except perhaps the Brothers Grimm (and they have a matching collection for them, here: http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Grimms-Fairy-Tales/9781606600108-item.html?ref=item_page:richrel)

About the Author

Hans Christian Andersen, one of the best known figures in literature, is best know for combining traditional folk tales with his own great imagination to produce fairy tales known to most children today. The Danish writer was born in the slums of Odense. Although he was raised in poverty, he eventually attended Copenhagen University. Although Andersen wrote poems, plays and books, he is best known for his Fairy Tales and Other Stories, written between 1835 and 1872. This work includes such famous tales as The Emperor's New Clothes, Little Ugly Duckling, The Tinderbox, Little Claus and Big Claus, Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, The Story of a Mother and The Swineherd. Andersen's greatest work is still influential today, helping mold some of the works of writers ranging from Charles Dickens to Oscar Wilde and inspiring many of the works of Disney and other motion pictures. Andersen, who traveled greatly during his life, died in his home in Rolighed on August 4, 1875.

"A superb book of Andersen''s tales . . . it will be difficult for other commemorative editions to match this publication." --Jack Zipes
