Burl is a troubled boy who flees his home and sets off for the Canadian wilderness to escape his abusive father. But Burl doesn't count on meeting Nathaniel Orlando Gow, an eccentric musical genius who changes his life forever by exposing Burl to a wonderful new world. Brilliantly crafted and filled with the author's wry humour and insight, The Maestro is a superb piece of young adult literature that earned Tim Wynne-Jones his second Governor General's Award for literature.

Employee Review

Combining realism with fairy tale elements, Wynne-Jones tells the story of 14-year-old Burl, who escapes his abusive father into the wilderness of the Canadian Shield. There he stumbles upon the Maestro, an eccentric pianist living in isolation, who fosters in Burl a new concept of himself. I think of Wynne-Jones, two time Governor General's Award winner, as the Michael Ondaatje of children's writers. His writing is magnificent, and his stories are captivating. This book is ideal for any child struggling to find their place in the world -- which if you think about it, is really every child.
