Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lemony Snicket + Louis Sachar. Remember how I didn't really enjoy Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children? Well, I would have loved that story more if it had been more like The Mysterious Benedict Society. This book is witty and humorous. It messes with your head until you realize you have completely fallen for this book. If Lemony Snicket and Louis Sachar were chemical compounds then Trenton Lee Stewart's writing is a homogeneous mixture of those two. But, you ask, Stella, what does that mean? It simply means this book is "a substance that is uniform in composition [...and] when dividing the volume in half, the same amount of material is suspended in both halves of the substance." What I am saying is I cannot define this book as a Snicket-esque book nor can I say it is an homage to Sachar because it is neither. It is its own style - The Trenton Lee Stewart style. Components of Snicket and Sachar are blended so well within it that it's no longer separable. Considering Mr. Snicket and Mr. Sachar are two of my favourite authors, it's not a mystery why I enjoyed this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Istant Classic! This book is a great adventure for all ages. I read it at the age of 11 and really enjoyed it. It was like no other book I had ever read before. Stewart has a great imagination and knows how to make a great book that will stand out. The book had just the right about of adventure and the right about of friendship to make a great book. As a lot of the other reviewers have mentioned, I think it is better suited for ages 8-12 not ages 7-9. Overall a great book for all ages (including adults) !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new name in adventure classics! Trenton Lee Stewart's The Mysterious Benedict Society will appeal to adults and children alike. A fantastic novel with important lessons, including truth and loyalty. The main characters, Reynie, Sticky, Kate and Constance are instantly likeable (except maybe Constance). You really feel like a part of the group and your heart aches for them to succeed. I won't give too many details because I'd hate the give away the plot. It's hard to put this one down. Stewart's imagination is incredible. I think this series will rank among my favorites for a long time. Definitely worth picking up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It I have been looking for an edge-of-your-seat-type book to read aloud to my 8 year old daughter ever since we finished the Spiderwick Chronicles and Beyond Spiderwick. Well, we started reading this book and we were both hooked. I got so into it, I read ahead after she went to sleep and I couldn't put it down. This is a very creative and entertaining book that is also quite well written. I would agree with other reviewers that 9-12 is a better age range, especially if they are reading it solo. I'm not sure that my 8 year old would be able to read it on her own, but loves hearing it read to her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fun read! This book was a blast. It's listed here for ages 7-9, but it's probably 8-12. It's a great adventure! Kids shouldn't be daunted by the length of the book - it's a fast-moving, fun story. I'm looking forward to getting hold of the sequel, and to hearing what my kids think once they've read it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Something new....for a change... I'll have to admit, I'm a picky reader. I simply hate it when books come out the are amazing and right away thirty more wanna-be's follow them up. It happen with all amazing books. So when I picked this book up and saw the ad on the back for gifted children, I put it down again. I mean, who hasn't heard that one before? Well, to tell you the trust, the book kept nagging at me. It was sitting there on the shelf ever time I visited a book store, so finally one day, I bought it. I am so glad I did! Though many say this book is similar to Harry Potter for having a school, I must say that it is very much NOT like HP. No fantasy, nothing. SPOILERS TO FOLLOW: As for the school, or, The Institute, its not actually a real school, but rather, a front for a higher and darker scheme. The four gifted children chosen are sent there to be secret agents by Mr. Benedict. Personally, my favorite was Constance Contraire, one of the most interesting and original characters I have met in a long time. I also loved "The Great Kate Weather Machine", but you should probably meet them for yourself. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Kids LOVED It!" I read this book aloud to my ten and eight year old daughters, and they were gripped! Totally followed the characters, grew to care about them immensely and by the end I was forced into reading two or three (long) chapters in one sitting just to satisfy their curiousity. I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when I tell them that there is going to be a #2!
