Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Polar Express This is by far my favourite Christmas book to read to my class and now to my grandchildren. It is the story of a little boy and his excitement over Christmas and the wonders that it presents. His train ride and visit with Santa is truly magical and something that all children do dream about. The fact that only children hear the bell brings such magic to this time of year and makes adults remember the magic of Christmas. It is the little things that count, as children often remind us about.William Hurt reads it extremely well. It is a cherished story in our home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my all-time favorites This book was read to me when I was in the first grade. I am now 21, and still feel that this is one of my favorite stories. My boyfriend bought the hardcover version of this book for me last Christmas, and I know it is a book that I will read to my children one day. Even after all this time, I remember this story very clearly, and everyone I know who has read it has come away with a really warm feeling inside. I definitely recommend this story to those who are a "kid at heart", and love Christmas not for it's material present-giving components, but for what Christmas is supposed to be about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of Those Magic Books This book is one of those magic books that make up a special tradition in our family Christmas. Every year, as we open up the box of Christmas decorations, our Polar Express is waiting to be read by light of the newly decorated tree. Reading this book with the smell of fresh cut pine, and thoughts of sleigh bells makes us all believe once again in a childhood dream come true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Santa's not just for kids! What a wonderful story that reminds everyone that Santa exists to everyone that believes in him. It's also a wonderful reminder that Santa is more than a guy in a big red suit.

About the Book

A magical train ride on Christmas Eve takes a boy to the North Pole to receive a special gift from Santa. Winner of the1986 Caldecott Medal.

Read from the Book

"On Christmas Eve, many years ago, I lay quietly in my bed. I did not rustle the sheets. I breathed slowly and silently. I was listening for a sound -- a sound a friend had told me I''d never hear -- the ringing bells of Santa''s sleigh. ''There is no Santa,'' my friend had insisted, but I knew he was wrong. Late that night I did hear sounds, though not of ringing bells. From outside came the sounds of hissing steam and squeaking metal. I looked through my window and saw a train standing perfectly still in from of my house."

It's Christmas Eve and a young boy hops on the sleek train after everyone in his hometown has gone to sleep. When he arrives at Santa's house, the boy gets to choose any toy he wants! Instead of choosing the most popular or expensive gift, the boy asks for one of the bells from the reindeers' harness. Chris van Allsburg received two Caldecott Medals for Jumanji and The Polar Express. He is internationally-renowned for his delightful illustrations and stories. All aboard for the North Pole!

Editorial Reviews

"Even the most hardened Santa doubters might find in The Polar Express the faith to believe again." American Bookseller

"As always, the forms are sculptured, the perspectives as dazzling as they are audacious, the colors rich and elegant, the use of light and shadow masterly." Horn Book Guide

"The Polar Express is magic indeed." The New York Times

"The sumptuous pastel effects-train lights seen through falling snow and a vertiginous overhead view, from Santa''s sleigh, of his popular city-make this one of Van Allsburg''s most treasured visions." Newsweek

"One couldn''t select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children''s book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn''t ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Van Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children''s book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he''s produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder." Amazon.com
